An IRS Identity Protection PIN, or IP PIN, is a six-digit number used to help prevent someone else from filing a federal tax return with your Social Security number or ITIN.
Bring the current IP PIN for you, your spouse, and any dependent who was issued one. A missing or incorrect IP PIN can cause an electronically filed federal return to be rejected.
Lost or did not receive your IP PIN?
The IRS says you can retrieve your current IP PIN through your IRS Online Account. If online retrieval is unavailable, eligible taxpayers can call the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-4490.
